From his roots in his first proper band, Fairport Convention, (who, although often referred to as the English Jefferson Airplane were undoubtedly innovators of the British Folk Rock scene of the late 60's), through his musical and marital partnership with Linda Thompson (ne Peters), and on to his solo career, Thompson has consistently produced quality albums, weaving together traditional folk music, jazz, rock and so many other styles.

Despite being widely acknowledged as one of the best guitarists and songwriters that this country has ever produced, commercial success has, on the whole, eluded him. In addition to his own albums and live performances, RT is still an in-demand session musician, having guested on albums by artists as diverse as Loudon Wainwright, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Norma Waterson, Steve Winwood and Crowded House. He has been covered by everyone from Elvis Costello to REM, and has worked with such legends as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
