HIDE IT AWAY by Richard Thompson From the album "You? Me? Us?-Nude" This file conains two slightly seperate versions of hide it away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VERSION ONE Transcribed by Magnus Paterson from a live solo rendition on VH-1. OK, here's my best shot at the chords. This version assumes you can capo only the top 5 strings. I don't know the convention for chord notation in this configuration, so I'm working on the assumption that all positions are offset from the open string, regardless of fret number. That makes the E look scarier than it actually is. Just wrap your thumb around to play that one. Purists please note - I know you're not supposed to use your thumb, but if it's good enough for RT, it's certainly good enough for me. If you don't have a partial capo, either go out and buy a Jim Dunlop Trigger, or stick with what you have and don't bother voicing the 6th string. Doesn't matter what you do; it isn't going to sound like RT anyway!! Tuning: BGDGBE (5-string capo at 4th fret gives B B F# B Eb Ab) Chords in brackets are with a full 6-string capo. With the low E tuned way down to B, watch out for buzzes. There are lots of little fills played, and I'm neither a good enough guitar player nor transcriber to get them all. However, the B5 often is played as follows, running into a rather nice major 7: Ab |-----------0-2-- Eb |-3-----3-------- B |-0-----0---0-0-- F# |-0-------------- B |-0-------------- B |-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 Chords used are as follows: B2 - 00020x (x0020x) Bm7 - 003333 (x03333) E - 502010 (remember thumb!) (102010) C#7add2 - x22000 (x22000) E/B - 00555x (x0555x) B5 - 00003x (x0003x) B2 Bm7 I sigh and people pass by and I hide it away B2 Bm7 I wipe a tear from my eye and I hide it away E When I need you the most C#7add2 I hold the ghost of you inside Bm7 E/B So I keep the flame Bm7 E/B Go on my way Bm7 E/B Laugh at the game Bm7 E B5 And I hide it away Bm7 E B5 Hide it away Bm7 E B5 Hide it away I break down in the street and I hide it away; Can't speak, can't move my feet and I hide it away. I smile through the mask of my face, But deep and wide is the hurt inside. So I live to love Some other day; Laugh at the game And I hide it away. When I need you the most I hold the ghost of you inside. So I keep the flame And go on my way; Laugh at the game, And I hide it away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SECOND VERSION I'd like to offer a slightly different verison of hide it away for your viewing. It is still based around Magnus' version that he transcribed from that VH-1 version last year but has some notable differences! Onto the music.................. Additional Transcription and Playing notes from Rich Kendrick (Richard.Kendrick@student.shu.ac.uk) There is no doubt that on VH-1, RT plays this song with a six string capo across the top 5 strings. However, when playing the song live (as in concert live!), RT capos across the whole six strings. With this in mind I fiddled about a bit and am now sure that this is the version he plays. Pick which one you prefer and stick to it ;) When you play the song you'll notice that there is a very nice feel of alternating between the sixth and fifth strings as you change chords when picking/strumming the song. When strumming try to remember to ignore the sixth string on the relevant chords or damp with your left hand. The RT-purists amongst you will no doubt be able to pick and strum at the same time! Tuning: CGDGBE capoed at 4 to give Does this tuning sound familiar? Most guitarists will know it as the Vincent tuning. Someone also mentioned that Easy There Steady Now may be in this tuning. I second that decision :) Incidentally, Beat the Retreat is NOT in this tuning, contrary to what many people seem to think. But more on that tune to be added to this archive shortly! (Keep a check on the Celtschmerz album page!) Chords: (I'm not certain of the names for some of these chords so I will just go with Magnus' names :) ) B2 - x0020x Bm7 - x03333 E - 002010 (Notice that this tuning requires no thumb to be used!) C#7add2 - x22000 B5 - x0003x This position allows a lot of noodling to be done about the 005433 chord (an F position chord to me and you!) Another noticeable difference in the live version is that RT does not play the E/B chord at all. For every E/B chord he plays the E chord. So the song now goes: B2 Bm7 I sigh and people pass by and I hide it away B2 Bm7 I wipe a tear from my eye and I hide it away E When I need you the most C#7add2 I hold the ghost of you inside Bm7 E So I keep the flame Bm7 E Go on my way Bm7 E Laugh at the game Bm7 E B5 And I hide it away Bm7 E B5 Hide it away Bm7 E B5 Hide it away I break down in the street and I hide it away; Can't speak, can't move my feet and I hide it away. I smile through the mask of my face, But deep and wide is the hurt inside. So I live to love Some other day; Laugh at the game And I hide it away. When I need you the most I hold the ghost of you inside. So I keep the flame And go on my way; Laugh at the game, And I hide it away.
