The chorus has a little more going on than I've transcribed here, but
the bass line is mostly hitting a Bb.  I play the riff and then a Bb on
the low E and sometimes a D on the A string as well.

Another addition from Magnus Paterson:

I was noodling around the other day, and started to play the
tab of "I Misunderstood" from the tab site, & realised I was
singing about a minor third higher than comfortable (I had the 
capo on 3 for something else).
I switched key, and it all got so much easier, particularly
the little riff, which is now a simple D shape lifted on
and off, and running into a G6 as follows:

So, capo 3, shift Phillip's chords down a minor third and it's

Thanks Magnus, for your contribution.  The chords are much easier to play for a limited gutarist such as myself, but still sound in the same key.  Brilliant!
I would like to make a couple of suggestions.  There are two chord alterations I think could do with considering, on the chorus.  Your version could become as follows:

  Em                                            A
I thought I was saying good luck

                                      Bm         G
She was saying goodbye

I have changed the E to an Em, and removed the extra 'A' chord after 'goodbye'
