I MISUNDERSTOOD by Richard Thompson, from the album Rumor and Sigh Transcribed by phillip@princeton.edu. The chorus has a little more going on than I've transcribed here, but the bass line is mostly hitting a Bb. I play the riff and then a Bb on the low E and sometimes a D on the A string as well. Gm Dm Gm C Csus C Dm Bb C She said, darling I'm in love with your mind Dm Bb C The way you care for me, it's so kind Dm Bb C G Gsus G Love to see you again, wish I had more time Dm Bb C She was laughing as she brushed my cheek Dm Bb C Why don't you call me, angel, maybe next week Dm Bb C G Promise now, cross your heart and hope to die CHORUS Riff A E-1--3--5--5--5--3-------- B-1--1--3--3--3--3-------- Riff A /Bb But I misunderstood But I misunderstood But I misunderstood G C I thought she was saying good luck Dm Bb C She was saying goodbye Riff A /Bb But I misunderstood But I misunderstood But I misunderstood G C I thought she was saying good luck Dm Bb C She was saying goodbye Gm Dm Gm C Csus C Things I try to put shine in her eyes Wire wheels and shimmering things Wild nights when the whole world seemed to fly She said, the thing that's so unique When we're together we don't have to speak We'll always be such good friends, you and I CHORUS She was saying goodbye She was saying goodbye She was saying goodbye --------------------------------------- Another addition from Magnus Paterson: I was noodling around the other day, and started to play the tab of "I Misunderstood" from the tab site, & realised I was singing about a minor third higher than comfortable (I had the capo on 3 for something else). I switched key, and it all got so much easier, particularly the little riff, which is now a simple D shape lifted on and off, and running into a G6 as follows: E|-----0-2-2-2-0-0------ B|---3-0-3-3-3-0-0------ G|---2---------0-0------ D|-------------0-0------ A|-------------2-2------ E|-------------3-3-3-3-3 But I misunderstood... So, capo 3, shift Phillip's chords down a minor third and it's easy peasy. Give it a go. Cheers, Magnus Bm G A She said, darling I'm in love with your mind Bm G A The way you care for me, it's so kind Bm G A Esus E Love to see you again, wish I had more time Bm G A She was laughing as she brushed my cheek Bm G A Why don't you call me, angel, maybe next week Bm G A Esus E Promise now, cross your heart and hope to die CHORUS E|-----0-2-2-2-0-0------ B|---3-0-3-3-3-0-0------ G|---2---------0-0------ D|-------------0-0------ A|-------------2-2------ E|-------------3-3-3-3-3 But I misunderstood... (*3) E A I thought she was saying good luck Bm A G She was saying goodbye But I misunderstood But I misunderstood But I misunderstood E A I thought she was saying good luck She was saying goodbye (and back to Em for the intro chords) --------------------- Thanks Magnus, for your contribution. The chords are much easier to play for a limited gutarist such as myself, but still sound in the same key. Brilliant! I would like to make a couple of suggestions. There are two chord alterations I think could do with considering, on the chorus. Your version could become as follows: Em A I thought I was saying good luck Bm G She was saying goodbye I have changed the E to an Em, and removed the extra 'A' chord after 'goodbye' See what you think.
